SF Bike Style – A Sunday Afternoon On The Wiggle
SF Bike Style – Camping Chic
It’s been said that San Francisco doesn’t do fashion well. In fact, former San Franciscan and famed author Danielle Steel famously said about style in San Francisco, “There’s no style, nobody dresses up—you can’t be chic there. It’s all shorts and hiking books and Tevas—it’s as if everyone is dressed to go on a camping trip…” With all that stunning natural scenery around us, I guess it makes sense we’d have lots of outdoor gear. Being here, it is so tempting to want to throw on the kind of looks shown below which we are affectionately calling ‘Camping Chic’.
Happy camping/pedaling!
SF Bike Style – I see cool fedora hats and no dorky helmets
I see a cool beige fedora with aviator sunglasses.
I see a black hat and fat red tires. Check out his reversed bicycle stem.
I don’t know, but his handlebar grips, red brake cables, wheels and bell are as cool as his hat.
His whole outfit matches his fedora hat!
Another color-coordinated hat outfit!
Happy pedaling!

SF Bike Style – Ride like a bird, fly like a bike
Louis J. Helle, an international scholar, once said, “Bicycling is the nearest approximation I know to the flight of birds.” During last year’s London Olympics ceremony opening, there was a skit performed with dove bikes that was inspired by this quote.
The visionary founder of Apple, Steve Jobs, once compared the efficiency of locomotion between a man riding a bicycle and the flight of a condor. He determined that, “[sic] a man on a bicycle, a human on a bicycle, blew the condor away, completely off the top of the charts.”
So the idea that riding a bike is like flying like a bird must have truth to it.
Going downhill on many of San Francisco’s hills, I often wonder if this how it feels to fly like a bird. Is it the feeling of freedom, the ease of movement, the wind in your face, the speed, the glide…etc. that gives you this sensation?
The photos below capture some of that feeling. So carefree…

SF Bike Style – Purple Power
Never underestimate the power of the color purple to stick around even after the fall season. Besides the usual staples of gray and black, this was the most prevalent color worn by bicycle riders on the streets of San Francisco during a recent afternoon, a somewhat balmy January day.
The power of the color purple can even keep your bare legs warm.
I know what his favorite color is. =)
Purple and orange together always draw the eye.
Nothing more comfortable than a hoodie and especially in the color purple.
Purple pants on fire.
CYCLE CHIC The Book – Review
I just got the book ‘Cycle Chic‘ from my wife, Nellie. She won it for me in a contest at this wonderful blog, Cycle Chic. To enter the contest, each entrant had to write a statement of why they think the person they are trying to win it for deserves the prizes of a book and CD (Bicycle: Nora and One Left). I love the Cycle Chic blog and I follow it religiously. So, it was a heart-warming gift when she won it for me.
The book, like the blog, is by Mikael Colville-Anderson and has 288 pages and 368 colorful photographs with some fabulous quotes from famous people. One of my favorite quotes is, “Everytime I see an adult on a bicycle, I no longer despair for the future of the human race” – H.G. Wells.
Most of the photos were taken in Copenhagen and show everyday people on their bicycles going about their business. Like the blog’s message, it accentuates the notion that cycling is for everybody and that you can look chic while riding. There are no photos of men in lycra, helmets and on road bikes. And that is exactly what we witnessed during our vacation in Copenhagen a year and a half ago. What I find interesting is that the photos really capture the people and their city’s vibe with such little text. It’s a great coffee table book or can be a nice gift to a person that you love. It was recently released and only comes in hardcover for now.

Style over speed, elegance over exertion – Cycle Chic Slogan
Cycle Chic in Golden Gate Park?
On a lovely sunny but chilly Sunday afternoon in Golden Gate Park, I spotted some people who looked “dressed for the occasion” riding bikes.

He’s ready for a special occasion.

It’s a nice day to bring your dog along.
